Job Description

Org. Setting and Reporting

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.

Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship.

ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

This internship is located within the Conflict, Occupation and Development Section, Emerging and Conflict-Related Issues Division (ECRI) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the Chief, Conflict, Occupation and Development Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ECRI.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following:
Responsibilities of the internship position encompass all aspects of the section and, in general, of ECRI’s work. The intern will be responsible for carrying out, but not limited to, the following tasks:

1 - Provide assistance for quantitative and qualitative background research for ECRI documents; reports, working and technical papers;
2 - Compile, process and work with socioeconomic databases in countries in conflict, crisis and transition;
3 - Document and conduct legal and internet research on Least Developed Countries and the Istanbul Plan of Action from national sources through identification of data sources and preparation of data sets;
4 - Draft analytical summaries of intergovernmental discussions;
5 - Research assigned issues on governance and institutional development;
6 - Gather information and identify and explore opportunities to support ECRI to advance its agenda through analytical work;
7 - Assist in documentation and preparation of expert group meetings and other events of the division;
8 - Undertake any other assignment requested by the Division Director and Section Chief.
