The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Subregional Office for North and Central Asia (SONCA), located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, offers an internship opportunity for a minimum of four months with possible extension up to six months.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours).
SONCA covers nine ESCAP member States in North and Central Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan participates in the activities of SONCA as a member of the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

Under the general guidance of the Head of Office and the direct supervision by a professional staff member, the intern will:
•Assist in undertaking researches for promotion of innovative sustainable development strategies and policies at the subregional level in support of the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals in North and Central Asia in sectoral areas, such as (a) environment and development, (b) disaster risk reduction and information and communication technology, or (d) environment and agricultural statistics.
•Assists in the organization and servicing of regional ministerial conferences, intergovernmental and expert group meetings, and seminars/workshops relevant to the above subject, as well as undertake subsequent follow-ups and implementation of recommendations in the related field.
•Contributes to the strategic planning, formulation and implementation of the programme of work and priorities of the Office towards the balanced integration of environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainable development and promotion of environmentally sustainable economic growth of the region.
•Undertake ad hoc tasks assigned by the supervisor.
