Job Description

Org. Setting and Reporting

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Subregional Office for North and Central Asia (SONCA), located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, offers an internship opportunity for a minimum of four months with possible extension up to six months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or section to which they are assigned.

SONCA covers nine ESCAP member States in North and Central Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan participates in the activities of SONCA as a member of the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

Responsibilities

Under the general guidance of Head of Office and the direct supervision by a professional staff member, an intern will assist with conducting research and producing capacity building materials related to economic development in North and Central Asia:

-Support research and data analysis on thematic areas corresponding to the national and regional strategies of North and Central Asia countries in line with the SDGs and Vienna Programme of Action. ;

-Contributes to the production of research reports and publications, policy/discussion papers for SPECA Economic Forum and Governing Council meeting;

In addition, regular duties of the intern will include assistance in compiling socioeconomic data; drafting and preparing official documents, speeches and presentations; assistance for conferences and meetings; and other activities upon request.
