Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located within Subprogramme 5: "Statistics for evidence-based policymaking" of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA - unescwa.org). The intern reports directly to the Director of the Subprogramme, and/or to senior staff of the Subprogramme with respective/delegated authority.
The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. The internship certificate is awarded on the recommendation of the supervisor.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage to cover the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Under each substantive area within the Subprogramme, including Economic Statistics, Trade and Industry Statistics, Demographic and Social Statistics, Environment and Energy Statistics, Gender Statistics and Data Science and Statistical Information Systems, the Interns will be responsible for the following duties in general for specific projects:
1 - Assists in designing, organizing, planning and managing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data.
2 - Assists in developing, implementing and managing statistical database(s) and data science projects.
3 - Assists in training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information.
4 - Performs methodological research as inputs for technical documentation.
5 - Prepares draft technical documents for, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports.
6 - Assists in the organization of seminars, working groups and expert meetings.
7 - Performs other duties as assigned.
